Birth Reflection and Birth Debriefing
Some birth stories stay with us longer than we expected.
Make sense of your birth story.
Every birth leaves an imprint.
Whether your birth unfolded as you expected or took an unexpected path, it is normal to have questions, unanswered thoughts, or emotions that continue to surface in the weeks, months or even years afterwards.
A Birth Reflection appointment offers a calm, supportive space to explore your experience with a registered midwife. There is no expectation that your birth needs to have been traumatic to benefit from a debrief. Some parents simply want to better understand what happened, while others are navigating grief, disappointment, fear, or feelings that they haven't yet been able to put into words.
Whatever your story, you deserve to feel heard.
Who is this for?
Birth Reflection appointments are suitable for anyone who would like to revisit and process their birth experience, including:
A birth that felt traumatic, frightening or overwhelming.
An unexpected birth outcome or emergency intervention.
Difficult emotions following pregnancy loss or neonatal loss.
Questions about what happened during labour or birth.
Feelings of disappointment, guilt, grief or self-doubt.
Preparing emotionally for a future pregnancy or birth.
Partners who would also like support in understanding the birth experience.
There is no "right" amount of time to wait. Some people attend a few weeks after birth, while others come many years later.
What happens during a session?
Every session is led by your story.
Together, we'll gently explore your pregnancy, labour, birth and early postnatal experience at a pace that feels comfortable for you. We may discuss your memories of the birth, your understanding of what occurred, your emotional responses, and any ongoing questions you still have.
Where appropriate, I can also help explain medical terminology, procedures and the sequence of events from a midwife's perspective, helping to bridge the gap between what happened and how it felt.
Some sessions involve simply being listened to. Others include education, reflection, grounding techniques or practical strategies to support your ongoing recovery.
There is no pressure to revisit anything you are not ready to discuss.
My approach
As a Registered Midwife with experience supporting families through pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period, I understand that every birth story is unique.
My approach is trauma-aware, compassionate and non-judgemental. Rather than focusing on whether a birth was "good" or "bad," I am interested in understanding what your experience was like for you.
My role is not to diagnose or provide psychological therapy. Instead, I offer a supportive space to reflect, understand your experience, and, where appropriate, connect you with additional services if you would benefit from further support.
